by AlanJ on 12 Mar 2007If you are new to mountain biking or a bit of a seasoned old timer this spot is an ideal day out.
Why? Because it has all the terrain types you could wish to ride crammed into a run of about 8 miles - technical forest singletrack, cinder track, tricky northshore (only one bit at the moment), a few climbs and a few lovely runs down built tracks with easy berms to try out your cornering on.(remember to lean into the corners and not overshoot them and get a facefull of mud as you tumble gracefully, it only makes your mates take the proverbial..)
As a beginner dont be put off by the lycra lads on £3000 bikes with all of the kit. You dont need all that. MTBing is all about getting out and having fun, even if you are the one on the Raleigh Grifter, puffing your way up a deceptively steep kerb. I would reccomend that you have a bike that would cost at least £500 - dont be tempted to try this on a £59 special out of the paper - you will leave most of the bike behind and wish you had taken up fishing.
This course allows you to test yourself and your bike and see just how much enjoyment you can get from the sport.
If you want to extend the day try this. A full cicuit of the Dog, follwed by a bacon roll, follwed by a half cicuit till you reach the point where you can cross a road and pick up the trails on the other side. There you can do something like another 7 miles of straightforward tracks in a big loop and pick the Dog up again at the road, finishing off with a couple of technical downhills to end the run with a grin.
Its a bit difficult to get to but you will find it by googling "cannock Chase Mountain biking"
If you want peace and quiet - do this on a Saturday morning at 9am, Sundays from March onwards are rammed!
Get out and have fun - and post loads of other trail centre or ride reviews so we can all benefit from reccomendations.
